Subject: A question for Harvard's Kennedy School of Government

Dear Dean Ellwwod,

In my correspondence with Professor Raine (below) I explained why I thought it was vitally important for Harvard University, and in particular the Kennedy School of Government, to promote a serious discussion of whether there ought to be a Jewish state in Palestine. Professor Raine agreed, but explained that her Carr Center is not the right institution within the School to do so. Hence, I am writing to you as Dean of the School to request that the school hold a symposium on this question. Do you agree that this is an important thing for the School to do?

Sincerely,

John Spritzler, Sc.D.

Dear Dr. Spritzler,

Thank you for your note. I don't think that we will be able to do such a forum at the present time.

Sincerely,

David T. Ellwood, Dean

Dear Dean Ellwood,

Thank you for your prompt reply. It is remarkable that the world's leading school of government cannot provide a forum to discuss whether there should be a Jewish state in Palestine -- the question at the very root of the conflict in the Middle East and central to the "war on terrorism," a question which is seriously discussed at virtually no other comparably prestigious fora in the United States, a question the failure to answer which makes a mockery of any pretense to a commitment to universal human rights, and a question about which many Americans are increasingly wondering: "Why is this question taboo in our universities and mass media?"

Could you please tell me what school, department or center at the University you believe will (or should) be able to do such a forum/symposium at the present time? Surely Harvard University must be able to do such a forum/symposium, would you not agree?

Sincerely,

John Spritzler
